A small slice of San Francisco transformed into an open, sun-filled retreat.

This quintessential San Francisco home on Nob Hill is tucked on a secluded site at the end of a pedestrian-only cul-de-sac. The small, sloping lot is only 57’ deep, but provides just enough space for the home’s tiny 25’ x 35’ footprint and a small rear yard. The gut remodel project maximized the available space in the home by converting the unfinished basement into a grandparent/au pair suite; opening up the first-floor kitchen, living, and dining rooms to create a connected, central living space; and reconfiguring the second-floor bedroom level to include a master bedroom with on-suite bathroom, an office, a kids bedroom, and a remodeled bath and laundry.

A new central stair connects the basement level with the two-story home above and continues upwards to a large, new, sun-drenched roof deck with beautiful views of the city and the bay. The owners say they enjoy spending much of their time on the roof and that it has quickly become their favorite “room” in the house.
